Hangxiety before work: what to do after drinking

Hangxiety is anxiety during a hangover: you wake up worried, restless or on edge after drinking. To handle hangxiety before work, check your symptoms, decide whether you can travel and do your job safely, and make the morning simpler with water, food if you can tolerate it, and a clear plan for your responsibilities.

The short version: three decisions for this morning

  • Decide what needs rearranging: your journey, work duties or caring responsibilities.
  • Make one short plan: get water and simple food, contact work if needed, and postpone non-urgent demands.
  • If difficult mornings keep happening, record the pattern and discuss it with a health professional.

Start with your commute and the work you need to do

Alcohol withdrawal is the reaction that can follow stopping or reducing alcohol when your body is dependent on it. Its symptoms can overlap with a hangover. Check the warning signs above instead of dismissing physical symptoms as another familiar morning.

Hangovers can affect attention, judgment and coordination around zero blood alcohol, including driving and safety-critical duties. Feeling calmer does not establish fitness for those tasks.

Before opening your inbox, name your first responsibility: driving to an appointment, looking after a child, handling equipment or reviewing routine emails. If you may still be impaired or feel unable to do the task safely, change the plan. Do not drive yourself. Arrange appropriate help or transport, and contact work if you cannot safely carry out your duties.

A taxi solves the driving part; it does not make a safety-critical shift safe. Working from home also does not remove every responsibility. Use the same question for each task: can I do this safely today?

Make a short morning plan you can actually follow

Put the essentials within reach before you start answering messages. Water, simple food and rest can make the morning more comfortable; recovery still takes time.

  1. Get water and something simple within reach

Drink water and, if you can tolerate food, try something bland such as toast or crackers. Rest if you can. Keep it simple rather than searching for a special breakfast or expensive hangover product. Extra caffeine can make anxiety harder to control, so avoid using repeated coffees as your morning plan.

  2. Try gentle breathing without forcing it

Sit comfortably with your feet supported. Breathe gently in through your nose and out through your mouth, letting the breath go only as deep as is comfortable. The NHS suggests continuing for at least five minutes. Give yourself a quiet space to try it.

  3. Make one practical contact

If you cannot work safely, notify the appropriate person through your usual absence procedure. If transport or caring responsibilities need changing, contact someone who can actually help with that specific task. A clear request is easier to answer than “I feel terrible.”

  4. Write down the next three things

For example: “Tell my manager. Ask Alex to handle the school journey. Rest and reassess.” If you are well enough for ordinary work, an alternative might be “Check today’s deadlines. Do one routine task. Review the important document later.” Keep the list short enough to use.

Keep a message to work brief and useful

Anxiety can turn a short absence message into a long explanation. Start with what your manager needs to arrange the day, and follow your workplace policy. For example:

“I’m unwell this morning and cannot safely carry out my duties. I need to take sick leave today. The handover notes for the 10 AM appointment are in the shared folder.”

If you need to discuss a change rather than an absence, make the request specific: “I’m unwell this morning. Could we move our non-urgent review to tomorrow? I’ll confirm what I can complete today.” Do not promise work you already know you cannot do.

Send the message through your usual channel, then deal with the immediate arrangements. You can have a fuller conversation later if one is needed.

Why can anxiety show up the morning after drinking?

Anxiety is a recognized hangover symptom. Initial relaxation can give way to restlessness as alcohol wears off, while disrupted sleep adds fatigue.

There may also be a concrete worry: an unfinished task, a conversation you cannot fully remember or an early meeting. Separate the facts you can check from the conclusions you are guessing. “I have not answered that message” is a fact. “Everyone thinks I am unreliable” is an interpretation. You do not need to settle every worry before deciding what to do next.

Research does not give everyone the same pattern. A 2019 naturalistic study followed 97 social drinkers, with 50 in an alcohol condition and 47 remaining sober. Highly shy drinkers showed an anxiety increase from the drinking measurement to the following morning. The small study did not establish that everyone becomes more anxious than their usual baseline, or that a difficult morning predicts future alcohol dependence.

If you are working, reduce unnecessary demands

Executive functions are the mental skills used to manage attention, remember information while using it and keep a goal in mind. A separate 2020 study tested 35 adults aged 18–30 both with and without a hangover. Participants made more errors on tasks involving switching attention, updating working memory and maintaining goals. This was a small study of cognitive tasks, not a measurement of workplace accidents or your ability to perform a particular job.

If you are fit for ordinary work, use a written list, work through one task at a time and check important details before sending them. Where possible, move a non-urgent complicated decision later in the schedule. For example, gather the figures for a report first, then review the recommendation when you can give it your full attention.

If you cannot manage the agreed duties, tell the relevant person and adjust the plan. You do not need to keep adding tasks to compensate for a difficult start.

How long will hangxiety last?

Hangover symptoms can last 24 hours or longer, according to NIAAA. That is not a hangxiety-specific countdown or a prediction for you. Coffee and showers do not speed recovery; more alcohol can prolong symptoms.

Seek medical advice if symptoms are worsening, you are unsure whether this could be withdrawal, or anxiety is not settling. Repeated anxiety, including anxiety on days when you have not been drinking, deserves a conversation with a health professional. A record of when it happens is more useful than assuming every episode has the same cause.

Prepare for the next workday before the evening starts

Once the immediate morning is handled, write three short notes: what you drank, roughly when you stopped and what became difficult the next day. Include the practical consequence, such as changing transport or missing a meeting. The purpose is to notice a pattern, not to write a judgment about yourself.

Choose one change you can prepare: arrange an alcohol-free evening activity, tell a friend you are skipping drinks, or plan an earlier exit from an event. If drinking feels difficult to change or you need alcohol to feel normal, speak with a clinician before abruptly stopping.

Freedom app can help you record days with or without alcohol and review your history. Use that record to notice recurring difficult mornings and prepare a change. Explore the app features or download it when you want a place to track your progress.

Questions about anxiety after drinking

How long does hangxiety last?

There is no reliable countdown for anxiety after drinking. Hangover symptoms can last 24 hours or longer, but your anxiety may follow a different pattern. Seek medical advice if it is worsening, not settling or repeatedly affecting your day.

What can I do about hangxiety at work?

First decide whether you can safely do your duties. If you can, make a short task list, handle one thing at a time and move non-urgent demanding work where possible. If you cannot, contact the appropriate person and follow your workplace absence procedure.

Will coffee help me get through hangxiety?

Coffee does not cure a hangover, and caffeine can make anxiety harder to control. Avoid relying on extra coffee to push through the morning.

Will another drink take the edge off?

It may briefly ease some symptoms but can prolong a hangover. If you need a morning drink to feel normal, seek medical advice about your drinking and withdrawal risk.

Why do I feel anxious even when nothing bad happened?

Anxiety can be a hangover symptom without a specific event to regret. You may feel restless as alcohol wears off, and disrupted sleep can leave you tired. You do not have to find a mistake from last night to explain every anxious feeling.

Does hangxiety mean I have an anxiety disorder?

One difficult morning does not establish a diagnosis. Speak with a health professional if anxiety keeps returning, affects daily life or also occurs when you have not been drinking.
